Sunform

All students need a solid early literacy foundation in order to meet the rigorous demands of the Common Core/Next Generation standards. Research has shown high quality PreK programs produce substantial long-term benefits for all students (NIEER, 2013), and they are especially beneficial for low-income children (Education Commission of the States, 2014). But, many educators worry that the early childhood curriculum has become too academic, and that children do not spend enough time in developmental play and discovery-based learning. Sunform’s research-proven, neurologically integrated approach to beginning literacy solves this conundrum by enabling students to rapidly master all of the short vowel and consonant letter sounds and shapes—now a prerequisite for kindergarten entry in many states—without sacrificing time for the other essential elements of the Pre-K curriculum. You are now able to prepare all of your Pre-K and kindergarten students for school success!   With just 15-20 minutes of daily Sunform instruction, your students will:

• Achieve all of the letter sounds in just 2-3 weeks

• Achieve all of the letter shapes after one month, and

• Begin blending all of the letter sounds/shapes after three months

Toggle Talk

Dialects enable people from different regions and cultures to express themselves with richness and subtlety, expressions and accents that embrace their culture. African American English (AAE) is just such a dialect; a linguistically rich and complex, rule-governed dialect of English. In classroom and professional settings, we speak Standard Academic English (SAE) which is also a dialect. Like other dialect speakers, young AAE speakers need to learn how to shift back and forth, from AAE to SAE, in order to succeed in literacy and on standardized tests. Unfortunately, most are left to figure it out on their own, and many never do.

ToggleTalk™ is the first evidence-based Contrastive Analysis program designed to meet the pressing need for kindergarten and first grade children to become bi-dialectally fluent before second grade reading and writing. Based on 20 years of evidence, the materials were developed over a three year period by leading child language researchers who found that young children can learn to dialect shift, generalize the skill spontaneously to other classroom activities, and demonstrate improved reading outcomes.

Contrastive Analysis

Students learn to distinguish between African American English and Standard Academic English, and translate highly frequent African American English features to Standard Academic English when prompted to do so.

Learning to dialect shift in the classroom has shown the potential to substantially improve reading outcomes (Craig et all, 2009), but until now Contrastive Analysis has been utilized as an intervention for older students.

Now, you can teach young children the AAE-SAE dialect “connection” with ToggleTalk™, a promising new solution developed specifically to help prevent the achievement gap!

ToggleTalkTM

ToggleTalkTM supplements the K-1 English Language Arts curricula with daily 15 to 20 minute lessons. Scripted lessons require little preparation time, and enable teachers unfamiliar with linguistics to deliver instruction with confidence and fidelity! Students build dialect awareness and learn to translate research-based high frequency and developmentally appropriate Morpho-syntactic and phonological AAE features. Program materials include:

· Scripted Teacher Resource edition with Scope & Sequence, Pacing, Correlations and Assessment Guide

· Graphic organizers, Sentence Strips, Photographs, and Center Activities

· Nine original storybooks by Debbie A. Taylor, Bank Street College of Education
